Take Your Kid To Work Day

For take your kid to work day I followed Vicky Hotte who is a local artist of the peace country, she showed me around her studio and taught me a lot of very useful advertising and marketing tips, I enjoyed my experience at the cultural center and would like to further improve my art skills.

DNA Cake

img_2985Our most recent Grade nine science project was to make a 3D model of a cell and of a DNA strand, me and my partner chose to do a cell cake with a liquorice DNA strand sticking out of the pink icing nucleus. We used chocolate sprinkles to represent the 46 chromosomes and the green, yellow, orange and red necklace candies on toothpicks to represent guanine, thymine, cytosine and adenine.

I had a lot of fun working on this project and after words we got to eat it.

The Coldest girl in Cold town blog post #2

The conflict of this story seems to be that Gavriel the vampire that Tana rescued has recently been exposed as the famed murderer otherwise known as The Thorn of Istra and is planning to murder the highest ranking vampire in cold town. Other conflicts that have begun are Aiden becoming a vampire and killing two people then turning Midnight into a vampire as well, after Midnight is turned she tries to turn her brother as well but accidentally kills him instead.

The most recent development in the story is that Tana, Aiden and Midnight have been granted access to the Eternal Ball, Tana is searching for Gavriel in order to warn him that the hunters are also in the Eternal Ball and are set on killing him before he can kill Lucien.

I believe that Tana will help Gavriel kill Lucien and become a vampire as well.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown Blog post #1

The main character Tana is a girl in her late teens, she seems to be strong, smart, brave and loyal, when she wakes up in a bath tub the morning after a party she discovers that everyone in attendance had been massacred by a vampire; afraid for her own safety she runs to a bedroom only to find a vampire and her ex-boyfriend bound in chains, Tana frees her ex who attacks her because he had become cold, the vampires who killed the party goers try to break down the door and despite the risks Tana rescues both her ex and the vampire who was chained in the corner because he tried to warn her about her ex. With the risk of Tana being cold as well as Aiden the vampire Gavriel suggests that they head to the nearest cold town.

The setting in the book seems to be modern times with the exception that a sort of vampire epidemic has broken out and cold towns have been built to contain people who are cold, vampires and people who want to be with or become vampires.

The Giver (response #4)

So we have recently finished reading the giver, yay!

This book reminds me of current day situations such as lethal injection, brainwashing, and extreme control from the government. I feel as though the setting of the giver may not be to far off from the actual future of the world, as people strive to make the world around them perfect in their own view and wars break out between countries and people that cant agree, places like north Korea have already began to resemble the society of the giver, people are raised to believe the beliefs of one man and they are cut of from the outside world.

The Giver (Response #3)

We are nearly done the book at this point, its going by surprisingly quickly and so there should only be one or two more responses after this one.

So, in The Giver recently Jonas has begun to experience pain for the first time in varying levels of pain, in the forms of a sunburn, a broken leg and a war time experience. Jonas has attempted to share memories with his friends, which did not work unfortunately, however when Jonas tried to share a memory with Gabriel he was successful in the transmission of the memory.

The Giver (response #2)

So in the giver so far, the main character Jonas is assigned the job of the receiver of memory, he describes feeling as though he no longer belongs in his society and people cast him strange glances as though he might be dangerous, later when he reads his instructions Jonas is puzzled at some of them such as  he is allowed to be rude, he can ask questions of anyone in the community about anything and they must answer.

Jonas goes to meet the Giver and is surprised to see that the Giver can turn off the spy wear in his room and that the Giver has many books, Jonas is given the memory of snow.

The Giver (response #1)

Our new novel study The Giver by Lois Lowry is from what I can tell about a dystopian society (I seem to be using the word “Dystopian” a lot lately but oh well) Ive only read the first few chapters, but its good so far, well written and interesting, Jonas is an eleven year old boy that is worried about his coming of age ceremony at which he will be given an assigned job and spend the rest of his life doing the job that is chosen for him, Jonas’s family is introduced and we learn about a few of the rules, and punishments of the society that our main character lives in.

A few of the more touchy subjects that are brought up in this book are:

The use of Lethal injection to dispose of unwanted individuals

A government that controls everything in the lives of the public

The eradication of crime and war, as well as all emotion

Alright thats all for today, sorry for the poorly written response!

It was recommended to me by a friend to read Toradora, I have only read the first book but it is so adorable!!! this romantic comedy is a must read, with unforgetable characters and a great story line that stopped me from putting it down, the funny exploits of Taiga and Ryuuji are enough to make anyone grin from ear to ear!

The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, by Ursula LeGuin

So These are  my thoughts on this short story by Ursula LeGuin,

The city of Omelas appears to be an idealistic utopian society in the begging pages but later develops a darker twist that really makes you think.  I think that the narrator would doubt that we would belive in the festival, the city or the joy because in the world that we live in such things like the perfect society are non existent or come with a cost, such as this one does with the young boy that must suffer in order to maintain the peace and happiness of the other towns people, and as a result the people that see him begin to understand and accept the fact that his pain is a necessary evil in order to stay happy, much like a religion the towns people teach their children to accept the situation and move on, however some individuals cannot accept the conditions of their happiness and leave.

I belive that this story asks us just how far one would go to keep a perfect society, the boy may also represent the third world countries of the world and how the more fortunate people simply look in the other direction or accept it as a sad truth.

Personal response:

If I had to choose to stay or leave I would probably leave, I have never been good at standing up for myself or for other people, I would also have to take in to consideration that helping the boy may result in the downfall of the rest of the town its a hard question to answer, I think most people would not hesitate to say that they would free the boy no matter what the risks but taking risks makes me extremely uncomfortatble so I would likely leave the city of Omelas if I had to choose.    This is a wonderful short story that I would recommend to people who like to think about the deeper meaning of things.
